Teachers report that family separation disrupts children’s learning: this webinar provides teachers and school staff with practical tools to help separating families and limit disruption in school.

Parental separation doesn’t have to mean poor outcomes for children, but the way that the separation is handled matters. “If we had a blank sheet of paper and were designing a package of support for a child whose parents are separating, that child’s school would of course play a fundamental role in that plan.” Sir Andrew McFarlane, President of Family Division

The Parents Promise conducted an extensive survey across schools in 2025, and found that most schools have little training or resources to know how to manage family separation when issues arise within a school setting. Working with a multidisciplinary group, the Parents Promise has put together a suite of resources for schools.

The webinar will present the survey data, plus the practical resources available for schools. These are useful tools for any family mediator to approach their local school, to present them and build good links between schools and family professionals. They are all available on the Parents Promise website to download. The #ParentsPromise – Education Initiative.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding the needs of schools, using evidence from survey data
  • Presenting the different resources available within the Education Initiative, including a template School Separation Policy Guide
  • What this means for children and young people
  • How to promote the resources to local schools and colleges, through mediators and local family professionals
