We can encounter high conflict behaviours in much of the work that we do as family law professionals. Not least in mediation.

Sometimes the high conflict behaviour can be re-triggered by clients meeting together for the first time in a while. Past difficult circumstances, feelings and emotions can be remembered and recalled, sometimes at an even more heightened level of distress. When this behaviour occurs it can be a difficult and stressful time for all and it is not easy to sit with the discomfort.

This presentation is intended to assist family professionals, especially family mediators, to prepare for and better manage these challenging situations and to begin to think about how we might respond appropriately and develop strategies to help us manage and to help our clients as necessary and appropriate. It should also provide a greater sense of control over these stressful situations which might otherwise feel overwhelming. Many mediators will have experienced clients in dispute and recognise that these can quickly escalate and generate stress and present a significant challenge. Every mediator will benefit from gaining a better understanding of what may lie beneath and develop strategies to manage and deal with these situations, and gain an understanding of some of the psychological factors which can be key to working effectively with high conflict situations.

We will be looking at some theories and strategies to help devise a range of practical solutions for working with clients at these challenging times.

This webinar is designed specifically for mediators and other family law professionals irrespective of the practice model they follow or the field in which they work.

Learning objectives:

  • To understand how to better prepare for high conflict situations
  • To begin to think about how you might respond appropriately and develop strategies to help better manage high conflict situations
